I'll never forget the surprise I got when I bought my first house (which was an estate sale - we bought the house and everything in it, and spent the first two weeks going through all the stuff and cleaning it all out!) ...and in the kitchen was an old white painted pie-safe-type cabinet with various odd-sized drawers. But that wasn't the big surprise. The big surprise came when I took the first drawer out of the cabinet to empty it out and discovered that it was made from an antique fruit crate! In fact, all the drawers were. I was in love! I still have this "treasure" of a homemade cabinet and will never part with it!

DeleteI was given some very old wine boxes and used them as planters but have regretted it, as they haven't stood up to the weather. Now I'm emptying them out and drying them to re-use elsewhere.....
DeleteOkay, now I have 80 more things to add to Pinterest. :-) I think the crates-as-shelves are my favorites.

Deletekraftylady Love. & love all wood boxes. I found an old box with a coffee brand on the sides I purchase for $5. I used as a coffee table. Placed my favorite quilt inside of box and have a peice of Glass cut for the top.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you had a great find!!
DeleteMan, I love the idea of using these wooden crates/pallets! Where do people find these materials though?
ReplyDeleteThe best thing to do is ask around at shops and hardware stores and grocery stores if they have any unwanted wood pallets or wood crates. Lots of businesses give pallets away, others re-use them so be sure to ask. Older-type vintage crates are a bit harder to come by but are commonly found at larger-type flea markets.
DeleteLove your stuff! I've been using old crates and boxes for years for shelves, they are beautiful and functional, I find them hard to resist!
ReplyDeletei've been a crate junkie for 40 years. they've traveled with me in two moves and i love them as end tables, book shelves et al.
